Home school has legally been a concern to many in California. However, since the California Court of Appeals case in 2008 (which Sunland was granted special status), there have been less legal concerns.
California Home Educators Legal Defense (CHELD) does offer home school legal defense memberships to families who are enrolled in a California private school. The annual fee is $25.00 per family.
CHELD provides quality home school legal defense and assists the local independent study programs (ISP) with a wide range of administrative services: counsel on record keeping, interfacing with public school officials, dealing with family and student problems, etc.
Membership families agree to (1) exercise diligence in responsibly teaching their children, (2) using a defined program of education, whether formal or informal, (3) keeping minimal records: course of study, faculty information and attendance record, (4) along with other membership responsibilities.
The school administrators agree to (1) provide general supervision of the home school process, (2) assess and evaluate each student, (3) provide necessary resources for the families under their care.
California Home Educators Legal Defense has been serving home schooling families and independent study programs since 1986 and has successfully resolved all conflicts outside of a court of law without compromising a family's values or constitutional rights.
Concerns may rise in relationship to home schooling on many fronts: the legality of home schooling, the accurate accounting of educational credits, or the physical, emotional or social welfare of the children.
