WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

November 2007

As we find ourselves in the first week of November it is our hope that your family has settled into a school year routine!

This is also the month of Thanksgiving, and even this early in the month, we are anticipating our plans to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. Sometimes the true meaning of Thanksgiving gets lost in the busyness of our daily lives and we can only manage to just keep trudging through our hectic schedules. Certainly pausing to consider all that we are thankful for is a wonderful and significant thing for each of us to do. Overwhelmed with all we have on the plates of our lives, we are thankful just to get the house tidied up, the turkey baked and the table set before our guests arrive.

The truth is there's a very real need for us to be intentional about considering what we are thankful for in our lives. I would like to suggest that Thanksgiving be our friendly yearly reminder of a practice we should make apart of our daily lives all year round.

Consider the word Thanksgiving. The word "thanks" brings a smile and motivates us to want to do and be more. We as parents often feel our children aren't thankful and appreciative of what we do for them. And in many cases that may be true. Where do they learn the act of being thankful? Do they see us demonstrating thankfulness to others, our spouse, family members, and friends or to them?

I believe the act of thankfulness and appreciation can be contagious. But it has to start somewhere… We as our children's teachers are their models. Pause today and list things for which you are thankful. List things from the silliest small thing to the things you may take for granted. Truly consider all that God has blessed you with. I'm sure you will find you have much to be thankful for. Recognizing your blessings causes negative things to pale in comparison. The other half of thanks is giving. Begin giving words and acts of thanks to those who should and need to hear it from you. You can bring the meaning of Thanksgiving to your family as apart of this year's feast and celebration.

From Terry and I, thanks for all you give to us through the relationships we enjoy with you and your families. We wish you a blessed Thanksgiving!
