CHELD (Home School Legal Defense Memberships) California Home Educators Legal Defense (CHELD) offers home school legal defense memberships to families in California. CHELD helps homeschool families deal with contacts from both the local public school and the Department of Children Services. Administrative assistance is also given to the administrator of any homeschool program (ISP or PSP) which has CHELD members. Families with special needs children can also find support and assistance. Annual cost - $25.00 per family.
Testing - Home school families desiring to have their student take an annual achievement test, may sign up to have their student tested at one of CHE’s Southern California testing locations. While home school NISAC (National Independent Study Accreditation Council) is a non-government, peer accountability for home school programs, providing credibility for the organization and professional interfacing with public and private schools. The California Appellate Court handed down an historic landmark ruling confirming that “a non-credentialed parent can teach their own children at home!” This is the first time in California history a homeschool ruling of this magnitude has been rendered. Homeschooling families can continue to homeschool with the assurance that what they are doing is legal in California! California Home Educator’s administrator, Terry Neven, was honored to have worked with Pacific Justice Institute in reaching this ruling.
